Why is My Air Conditioner Leaking?

AC InstallIf you notice that your air conditioner is leaking water inside of your home, your first thought may be that it is broken. Though often a leak could mean something serious, the problem may not be as severe as you think. Below are three reasons why an air conditioning unit may be leaking and in need of AC repair in Houston, TX.

  1. The condensate drain line is clogged

One of the most common causes of a leaky air conditioner is a clogged condensate drain line. Over time, the drain line can get clogged with dirt, dust, sludge, and even mold. This results in the water backing up into your home. This can be unclogged by a wet/dry vacuum on the line, or by an AC specialist.

  1. The drain pan is rusted or damaged

If your AC unit is older, the drain pipe may be damaged or rusted to the point where the water falls through and into your home. If this is the case, you will need to get the pan replaced. This is also an excellent opportunity to evaluate the unit itself to determine if other parts need to be repaired.

  1. The condensate pump is broken

If your air conditioner is installed in the basement, you most likely have a condensate pump leading water outside of the home. If you are finding a pool of water in the basement around the unit, it is likely that this pump is broken and will need to be repaired or replaced.
